"I wanted to write a post-breakup song about how turning hard and mean can be a coping mechanism. But also, I wanted a song with some swagger to it, sorta like "The Wanderer" by Dion and about as realistic. As I was well into my 'I don't care about anything anymore' stage of the breakup, this whole 'Cutting Tailor Modern' album was full of 'who the fuck cares' production decisions, including not bothering to write a bridge or an ending for this like I probably would've at another more well-adjusted time. The ending is just a cacophony of royatly-free sax samples all blowing at once like a traffic jam to your heart. And I never get there."
Song this most closely rips off:
"Not in sound but lyrically, there is a great Marvin Gaye b-side written by Smokey Robinson called "When I Had Your Love" that I fell in love with. So much for remaining passionless. I wanted very much to match that. Its sense of loss is what I connected with, and its kooky King of Siam arrangement is about as far from this as Siam now."
lyrics
Passionless
written by Serene Dominic
When I had your love, I had everything
But I reached too high, started plummeting
I crashed down to earth without intensive care
And I didn't belong to no one nowhere
To be passionless., feeling free
There's no emotion causing a commotion in me
I take what I want, spit what I don't need
And I don't feel bad watching someone bleed
I will win her back, you just wait and see
Then we won't be laughing at a deposed king
I'll be passionless., feeling free
There's no emotion causing a commotion in me
