Suspend Your Disbelief

about

Serene 2020 hindsight
"I've been obsessed with Buddy Holly for a lifetime. When I was a kid he was a guy with glasses on the back of one of my parents' albums (Claudio Villa Sings, thanks for asking) as "More Coral Albums You Might Enjoy'. It was an album called The Buddy Holly Story. Seemd like an unlikely entertainer to me. Didn't even know he was a rock and roll guy until I saw that same album cover on the background set of Hullaballoo. I don't think I even heard a note of his music until "American Pie" came out and they released a 2 disc set of him in 1972. I saw a trade ad for that album in Rolling Stone that had the familiar finger snapping photo of him superimposed inside a milk shake. Seemed kinda disrespectful after all he'd been through.

Didn't buy an album of his till some 20 Greatest Hits they put out to cash in on the Gary Busey movie which I stayed away from. I saw Busey performing "Oh Boy" on SNL and it was no endorsement. There exists only 11 minutes of Buddy Holly captured on film. It took the advent of YouTube to see that. And yet something about Buddy Holly and the miracle of all the music he made in three short years held my interest right up to today. Now you can get any song he ever recorded at your fingertips but back when I started on this Buddy Holly jag, even finding a copy of The Buddy Holly Story in a used record store for less than 50 dollars was rare, I did eventually find one with a crack in the first two tracks at a thrift store. And I still have it.

The Winter Trance Party album I recorded in 2012 had tributes to each of the three that died hat day and even a song for the pilot. This song was a leftover from my Vertigo inspired Unnatural Blonde album so there's a lot of hanging on for dear life references that I tailored to be a Buddy pastiche with a lot of hiccups that I'm sorta embarrassed by now. He's one of those cut from whole cloth singers like Robin Gibb that you have to imitate completely in order to sing any of his songs. "

Song this most closely rips off:
"This song is a kinda mashup of "Peggy Sue" and Georges Bizet's "Les Toreadors" from the opera Carmen.

Suspend Your Disbelief
Written by Serene Dominic , 2012

You’ve got to suspend you disbelief
The time for love is now and the time is brief
You’ve got to recalibrate your depth of feel
For you to know, my love is real

It's a lie, it ain't true
It's a story made up to
To keep the easily amused
From feeling Lonely

It's a hoax all a ruse
To alleviate the blues
Reinterpret to keep you blue and lonely

What am I doing here?
Only fools in love would dare
Instead of just hanging here
Hanging on for dear life?
Wish that I was over there
Sitting in an easy chair
Watching some fool over here
Hanging on for dear life
Hanging on for dear life
Hanging on for dear life

You’ve got to suspend you disbelief
The time for love is now and the time is brief
You’ve got to recalibrate your depth of feel
For you to know, my love is real

Any resemblance to persons living or dead
Is a coincidence
The world is lonely
